Why Measuring Correctly Matters

Measuring your appliance space properly before ordering prevents delivery delays, installation problems and unexpected returns. Whether you're buying a freestanding washing machine or an integrated fridge freezer, accurate dimensions ensure your new appliance fits perfectly within your kitchen or utility layout.

Always measure the space — not your old appliance. Cabinet openings and flooring changes can affect usable dimensions.

How to Measure for a Washing Machine

Most freestanding washing machines are approximately 600mm wide, 850mm high and between 500–650mm deep. However, depth varies significantly between models.

Freestanding Washing Machines

  • Measure the width of the space at floor level
  • Measure the height from floor to underside of worktop
  • Measure depth including required pipe clearance
  • Allow at least 20–30mm behind for water hoses
  • Check that the door can fully open without obstruction

Integrated Washing Machines

  • Cabinet opening must be exactly 600mm wide
  • Check door hinge system (fixed or sliding)
  • Ensure ventilation gap at rear
Flooring changes such as new tiles can reduce available height. Always re-measure if flooring has been updated.

How to Measure for a Fridge, Freezer or Fridge Freezer

Refrigeration appliances require additional clearance for airflow. Failing to allow ventilation space can affect performance and warranty.

Freestanding Models

  • Measure width at narrowest point
  • Allow 20–50mm ventilation at rear
  • Ensure doors can open fully
  • American style models require extra side clearance

Integrated Models

  • Housing height must match model specification exactly
  • Confirm door hinge type compatibility
  • Ensure airflow via plinth venting
Check that the appliance can pass through doorways and hallways before delivery.

How to Measure for a Dishwasher

Dishwashers are available in full size (600mm wide) and slimline (450mm wide) formats.

  • Measure cabinet width precisely
  • Allow clearance for water and waste pipes
  • Ensure door clearance below worktop
  • Confirm plumbing connection location

Built Under vs Built In Double Ovens

Built Under Double Oven

Designed to sit beneath a worktop, usually below a hob. Typically around 720mm high.

Built In Double Oven

Installed within a tall housing unit at eye level. Usually between 880–900mm high.

Hobs

  • Measure cut-out width and depth
  • Check clearance underneath
  • Confirm electrical or gas supply access

Final Delivery & Installation Checklist

  • Measure doorways, hallways and staircases
  • Check access routes for large appliances
  • Ensure sockets and pipework are accessible
  • Confirm old appliance removal if required
